“I just wasted two
hours of my life in that lecture.” or it is usually sound like this; “Give me
back 2 hours of my life!” Whatever the sound is, that is significant to issue
of lecture hours are too long. It is true that the lecture is the main element or
important to student’s studies but if the duration of the lecture is too long,
that will cause the negative effect to student. This problem is due to several
factor; the non-systematic timetable, the demand of higher officer to maintain
a good result and the limit of student’s focus.
Firstly, the lecture hours in
Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) are too long are caused by the
non-systematic timetable of lectures. For example, the management of UTP has
chosen that the entire lecture will be pack on Monday to Wednesday which causes
the timetable to be overly packed. Consequently, students from some courses
have to sacrifice their free time to attend the lectures even at night.
Moreover, when the students have the lecture at night, they will have no time
to complete their assignment and homework which given by their lecturer.
Therefore, this problem not only give negative impact on students mental, but
also physical when students has to burn the midnight oil to complete their
work.
Besides that, another reasons
that caused the issue is because the demand of higher officer to maintain a
good result. In order to archive the academic target, the lecture hour has been
lengthened. It is undeniable that through this lengthened lecture hour, the
student’s understanding toward a subject will be better and students can answer
their examination with confidence hence pass with flying colors. However, this
will cause the students to become weaker in physical because they do not have
the time for physical exercise. This problem not only affects the students but
also the lecturers because they have to work longer than usual.
Lastly, the limited of student’s
focus also is the one of the causes of lecture hours to be felt too long. It
has been identified that teenagers like students only has the maximum focus on
something for only 30 minutes maximum. If the students try to focus more than
that duration, it will give negative effect on their mental. So, they can only
be able to pay full attention to lectures during the 30 minutes duration and
after that the tendency of students to think about other than lecture will
become increases. Therefore, this problem makes the lecture hours felt too long
and boring. If the lecturer continues to give the lecture after the student’s
focus limit, students will not able to understand what the lecturer trying to
deliver.
For conclusion, the lecture
hours are too long mainly causes by the non-systematic timetable, the demand of
higher officer to maintain a good result and the limit of student’s focus. The
management should do research and reconsider to reschedule the timetable and
reduce the lecture hour. This action can improve the students quality and to
ensure that the students have more time to study on their own.
