What a magnificent scene seeing many students sleep in IRC!’ Pitiful UTP students, rush here rush there lifelessly to attend plenty of lectures. Seriously, lecture hours in UTP are too long; even students have to go to lectures at night. What are the reasons for having long hours of lectures in UTP? There are several answers for this question: the nature of engineering and technology subjects, the attitude of students in study and the packed arrangement of time table.
Firstly, we all should realize that engineering and technology subjects are tough in nature. To become a successful engineer or technologist in future, a student need to know a lot of scientific knowledge. It is essential for UTP students to learn as much scientific knowledge as possible, so they can apply those knowledge to create new things for the betterment of mankind. Therefore, a lot of lectures are being carried out, to deliver as much knowledge as possible to students. But on the other hand, knowledge are being delivered in a face pace in lectures. As a result, students may not be able to digest the knowledge delivered in lecture properly. This makes the learning process to be ineffective.
Secondly, as students nowadays tend to be lazy in attitude if not being pushed hard, long hours of lectures is a way to force students to treat their academic properly. Students in Malaysia use to rely on tuitions to study well, as they have been trained to be so since primary and secondary school. When go to university, tuition classes are missing, thus students may not be able to study independently. More lectures are a way to help this kind of students, as they will be more comfortable learning in classes. However, long lectures hours cause those students who need to study by themselves lose their time to do self-revision. This may be unfair to them.
Lastly, long hours of lectures are the result of packed arrangement of time table. As engineering and technology subjects also emphasize on empirical value, practical sessions are assigned to each subject. As lectures and practical sessions can only be put in weekdays, all these things are packed together, and students are burdened with a lot of study slots. This causes students to sacrifice a lot of free time, at the same time their life become tiring.
In conclusion, the tough nature of engineering and technology subjects, the attitude of students and the packed arrangement of timetable are the reasons for long lectures hours in UTP. Whatsoever, UTP students have to go through these thwart. Only that, they will be well equipped with a lot of abilities, and this will help them in their careers.
